THE LEGENDARY JOURNEY TO PARATY "GOLD ROAD"
¿What is the Gold Road?

The Gold Road was built by slaves between the XVII and XIX. It is preserved and surrounded by the exuberance of the Atlantic forest, the National Park "Sierra of Bocaina". For its geographical position, Paraty was one of the most important port cities of the eighteenth century. Acted as Commercial port to send the gold production from Minas to Portugal. The road connected Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.
The Gold Road dates back to an old Indian trail used by the Guaianases that, from the coast of Paraty, reached the Paraíba river valley. That Way of Guaianases, advanced forces Martin Correia de Sá (Portuguese versus seven thousand two Indians) who started from Rio de Janeiro in 1597 and landed at the Bay of Paraty, climbed the mountain of the Sea to fight the Tamoios, allies of the French corsairs in this coast.
Since the discovery of gold in the state of Minas Gerais at the end of the seventeenth century, its trajectory reached the village of Falcão (current Cunha), reaching the valley of the Paraíba (Guaratinguetá), according to Villa Rica (Ouro Preto today, becoming an official way for the entry of slaves in the region (one way) and for the shipment of gold to mine (back). Visiting the Gold Road you can learn a great engineering work that still arouse admiration by their size and shape, stone upon stone, perfect fit, functional sewage systems. It also uncovers amazing nature. Waterfalls, homemade food, workshops, ... visit the Gold Road.
